Client : Victoria & Albert Museum
Project : Exhibition Gallery 48 refurbishment (The Porter Gallery)
Value : 500k

Victoria and Albert Museum commissioned Block Architecture to design the new contemporary Porter Gallery to transition from the historic museum space into the contemporary Porter Gallery. Aspinalls were appointed to detail design, supply and install the inspiring architectural features of this new gallery. At a high level over 3000 cables were used to support a mid level metal ceiling grid and each individual cable had to be tensioned in unison to maintain the appearance of perfect vertical alignment. The Aspinall design team developed a series of compression springs mounted to individual cables which guaranteed the unison cable tension. At the entrance to the gallery Aspinalls manufactured and installed 3 No. 7m high rotating aluminium framed doors with reflective black carbon fibre cladding. This lightweight material, more commonly found in aircraft manufacture, was intricately detailed to present a seamless contemporary finish on the external face of the doors.
